Art on Wheels

So on the weekend my hubby and I decided to head down to Chinatown to walk around and pick up some yummy food for dinner. Hey it’s the Chinese New Year, might as well indulge! Actually that’s one of my favourite things about living in Vancouver, you walk up one street you’re in India, up another street and you’re in Italy! So while we were on our little trip around the world we stumbled upon this amazing art gallery, Flatspot Longboard Shop. Ha! Okay it’s actually a skateboarding shop but really it’s art that can take you places. Now, I should mention that I have a bit of a soft spot for skateboards since I own one (I may have talked about this before). It’s pink, and I’ve never been on it. A birthday gift from a few years back it is, however, near and dear to my heart and one day I will ride it!

If you’ve never experienced boarding culture Flatspot is a great place to start. We walked in, clearly out of our element, yet we were welcomed wholeheartedly. They were really excited to have us in the store. The owner, who was standing behind the counter, promptly chatted us up.

I’ve always been really impressed with the sheer artistry of boarding. I have no idea what all the moves are called but it’s a jaw dropping experience to watch them practice in the park. The hours of training that go in to perfecting the technique is like that of any other sport. It has a rich history and a really prominent street culture.

There’s something so fun about skater fashion and I really love how it permeates into every day style. The artwork on these boards is just amazing. The colours and the details really can’t be beat.  I never  appreciated that the board, as fabulous as it can be, is just the beginning. You can customize the wheels and pick out all the gear for your unique look.

*I’m sure I got half the terms wrong so my sincere apologies to any serious boarders!*
